Carolyn Lundquist

Name: Carolyn Lundquist
Current job title: Research Scientist, Marine Ecology
Organisation: NIWA
Your role in AWIS: Exec member
Family: Husband (Pete) and two children, Edward (age 3) and Cate (age 1)
Academic background: PhD, Ecology, University of California, Davis
Area of science: I am a marine ecologist at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in Hamilton, New Zealand, and an honorary lecturer at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. I completed my undergraduate degree in marine biology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 1993), and my PhD degree in conservation ecology at the University of California, Davis (2000). I moved to New Zealand to take on a postdoctoral position in 2000, and soon took on a permanent position here at NIWA. My research focuses on the effects of human disturbances on marine communities, using a combination of empirical research and modeling to advise regional councils, government agencies, and community organisations on both conservation and utilisation of marine resources. I have a strong interest in communicating marine science to the public and to policy makers, and enjoy organising workshops, symposia and presentations at scientific conferences, with regional policy makers, and to local community groups. I have been attending AWIS meetings since I arrived in 2000, and assisted with organising the 2005 AWIS meeting in Hamilton.
Extra-curricular activities: Latest hobby is playing with my sewing machine which sat unused for the first 5 years I owned it. I also run (jog?) in a pathetic attempt to rid myself of my baby belly, and enjoy drinking fine wine (which contradicts the benefits of running).
Favourite book: Early Tom Clancy novels, Clive Cussler, John Grisham, Christopher Moore (and of course Eric Carle)
Favourite movie: Princess Bride, Sound of Music, Hunt for Red October (a bit eclectic)
